Abstract
PURPOSE: To ensure starting of an engine by a method wherein a pinion is made to engage with a pinion shaft until the engine attains to a certain revolution speed at the initial stage of the engine operation and prevent early disengage of the pinion from the ring gear.
CONSTITUTION: When a pinion shaft 11 is rotated by a driving shaft 10 of an electric motor, a movable cylindrical component 12 which engages with the shaft 11 slides on the shaft 11 compressing a return spring 13 so that a pinion 16 slides with the component 12 as one body and the pinion 16 is thrown to engage with the ring gear 21 of the internal combustion engine. The pinion 16 will at its most advanced point rotates with the shaft 11 as one body through a helical spline 11c, the moving cylindrical component 12 and an one directional clutch 15 and Shart the internal combustion engine. When the pinion 16 tends to slip away from the gear 21 by an instantaneous high speed in the initial starting period, a stopper 14 collides to the back face of a governer weight 19, preventing early disengagement of the pinion 16. When the internal combustion engine attains to a certain revolution speed, the engagement is released and the pinion returns to the retarded position.
