Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent each tooth from damage by a method wherein the engagement between an engine ring gear and a pinion during an idle running of an over-running clutch is obstructed in the protection unit of an over-running clutch device installed in an engine starting apparatus.
CONSTITUTION: During the idle running of an over-running clutch 8, a centrifugal force operates to a ball 11 and the ball 11 resists a spring 12 and enters a concave groove 10b of a shift ring 10. Accordingly, the engagement between the shift ring 10 and a clutch outer sleeve 9 is released. In this state, even if only the shift ring 10, the ball 11 and the spring 12 are transported forward along a spline shaft 9a, by means of a lever (not shown in a figure) being engaged with a lever engagement groove 10c, they are not carried to the clutch outer sleeve 9, as a result, the engagement of the pinion 2 with the ring gear of the engine is not performed. Whereas, during the clutch 8 being stopped, the same clutch 8 is transported forward through a lever operation, and a given cranking operation is performed.
