Abstract

362,747. Turning-gear. BRETTELL, F. G., 75, Colmore Row, Birmingham.- (Motor Devices, Inc. ; 540, North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) Jan. 27, 1931, No. 2613. [Class 7. (v).] The electrical circuits of a starting motor 1 and the ignition of an internal-combustion engine are controlled by a manually operated switch A which when moved in one direction consecutively energizes and de-energizes the circuit of an electromagnet 9 controlling the motor circuit and energizes the ignition circuit 27, and the starting motor is then maintained energized by a circuit closed by a moving part of the starter drive until the engine starts. When moved in the opposite direction, the switch de-energizes the ignition circuit without energizing the electromagnet. As shown, the switch A has stationary contacts 16-18 connected to a battery 22 and to the contacts 31, 32 of the electromagnet 9 ; a contact 19 connected to earth and a contact 21 connected to the ignition circuit 27. Movable contact arms 13, 14 insulated from each other are rotatable on an insulated member 15. On moving the switch from the inoperative position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4, the arm 13 bridges the contacts 16, 19, and the arm 14 bridges the contacts 17, 18, so that the electromagnet contacts 31, 32 are connected respectively to the battery 22 and to earth. The armature 10 of the electromagnet 9 then closes the circuit between the battery 22 and the starting motor 1, which is set in rotation. The starter pinion 3 is in screw-threaded engagement with a sleeve driven through a coiled spring, and moves axially into driving position, when its flange 4 engages a contact 5, completing another circuit from the electromagnet contact 32 to earth. In the second position, Fig. 1, of the switch A, the contacts 16, 19 are disconnected and the ignition contact 21 is engaged by the arm 27. On returning the switch to the position shown in Fig. 4, the arm 13 rides over a guard arm 20, so that the contacts 16, 19 are not connected and the motor 1 is switched off as soon as the engine overruns it and returns the pinion 3 automatically along its shaft. In a modification, the contact 18 is shorter and is connected to the terminal 12 of the electromagnet 9 through an additional lead in parallel with the lead 26, Fig. 1; in the second position of the switch A, the contacts 17, 18 are disconnected but current flows to the electromagnet 9 through lead 24, contacts 11, 12, the additional lead, and the lead 26.
