Abstract

1,064,604. Engine turning gear. SOC. ANON. D. B. A. April 6, 1965 [April 8, 1964], No. 14574/65. Heading F1K. In a starter device for I. C. engines the pinion 94 is driven through a freewheel 102 and a sleeve 98 by a motor shaft 90 helically splined to the sleeve. The pitch of the splines may be 5 to 20 times the shaft diameter. A non-rotatable member comprising elements 132, 133 having cupshaped lugs engaging spigots carried by a forked lever 138, is held in frictional contact with rotary discs 116, 117, by a rubber O-ring 126. On energization of the motor, the frictional drag created between the elements 132, 133 and rings 117, 116, causes the sleeve 98 to screw along the shaft until it forces the pinion into engagement with a toothed wheel 112 and a stop 114. When the engine starts the pinion 94 remains engaged with the toothed wheel 112, the freewheel 102 avoiding any overspeed driving of the motor. On de-energization of the motor the pinion 94 is dis-engaged from the toothed wheel by the combined effect of a return spring 144 acting on the forked lever, and frictional torque in the freewheel causing the sleeve to screw back along the shaft. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 1 to 4 (not shown), a pair of rotary rings are arranged one each side of a single non-rotatable plate having lugs engaging slots in the forked lever, and the rubber O-ring and return spring are each replaced by a coiled compression spring based against the freewheel and the bottom of a bore in the starter housing respectively. In modifications of the latter embodiment, the forked lever is omitted, the lugs on the non-rotatable plate having slots which engage over axially-extending ribs on the starter housing, and the coiled return spring is instead arranged either between the pinion and its end stop, Fig. 6 (not shown), or between a fixed plate and one of the rotary rings, Figs. 13 to 15 (not shown). In the latter arrangement the return spring additionally acts to maintain the rotary rings and the non-rotatable plate in frictional abutment.
