Abstract

602,442. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 30, 1946, No. 13012. Convention date, May 3,1945. Addition to 602,421. [Class 7 (v)] In an electric starter, of the kind described in the parent Specification the armature of the motor is moved to the, inoperative position by the sloping end of a plunger 21, Fig. 1, acting on a thrust member 24, the said plunger being forced downward by a spring 25 which is initially aided in the unseating of the armature retaining ball 53 by a shorter stronger spring 55. The armature is prevented from movement due to vehicle accelerations by the engagement of the member 24 on a straight part of the plunger 21. The plunger 13 is actuated simultaneously with the plunger 21 so closing the starter motor switch 7. A radially-acting leaf spring 48, Fig. 2, attached to the member 43 serves to separate the teeth 41, 42 of the over-running clutch by its engagement with the sloping surface 51 and to provide the necessary friction between members 29 and 39 during the meshing operations before the teeth 41, 42 engage.
