Abstract
895,031. Ratchet clutches. BENDIX CORPORATION. Aug. 30, 1960 [Sept. 30, 1959], No. 29933/60. Class 80 (2). A one-way clutch comprises " sawtooth " driving and driven members 2, 6 which are engaged during drive by a pin 8 carried by the driven shaft 5 and engaging helical slots 9, 11 in member 6, the members 2, 6 being separated by centrifugal weights 18 when driven member 6 overruns at a predetermined speed, but connected frictionally at lower speeds. As shown, the weights 18 are engaged with driven member 6 by a circumferential spring 23, and are provided with tapered projections 22 for engagement with the radially-projecting end 27 of a spring 25 frictionally engaging driving member 2. Thus, if member 6 tends to overrun pin 8 acting in slots 9, 11 disengages the clutch, but members 2, 6 are still frictionally engaged by springs 23, 25 and weights 18. If member 6 overruns at the predetermined speed weights 18 move outwards against spring 23 and the end 27 of spring 25 is disengaged from projections 22, so that members 2, 6 are completely disengaged from each other. When overrunning ceases the clutch is automatically re-engaged by the action of springs 23, 25 and pin 8 in slots 9, 11.
