Abstract
980,922. Change-speed gear; friction clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. July 10, 1961, No. 24936/61. Headings F2C and F2D. A two-speed belt drive for a vehicle accessory such as a generator or cooling fan, comprises a pulley 26 clutched to an input shaft 14 at low engine speeds by a centrifugally disengageable friction clutch 19 and driving through belting 49 a pulley 48 fast on an output shaft 50 at a step-up ratio, and a pulley 38 connectable by an over-running roller clutch 40 to the input shaft 14 when the centrifugal clutch 19 disengages above a predetermined engine speed and driving at a reduced ratio through belting 52 a pulley 54 also fast on the output shaft, the centrifugal clutch 19 being disengaged by a weighted lever 60 opposed by pre-stressed springs 80, 82 having zero rate to give snap action. The centrifugal clutch 19 comprises a drum 30 formed on the pulley 26 engageable by a friction band 32 carried by a split spring ring 20 secured at one end 70 by a pin 22 on a drive plate 18 fast on the input shaft 14. The centrifugally responsive lever 60 pivots with a pin 62 in the drive plate 18, a cam 66 secured on the pin 62 engaging the free end 68 of the split ring 20. When the input shaft 14 is driven slowly the lever 60 is held inoperative by the springs 80, 82, but above a predetermined engine speed the lever 60 pivots clockwise and the cam 66 spreads the spring ring 20, expanding the band clutch 19 to its disengaged position allowing the overrunning clutch 40 to take up the drive.
