Abstract

753,722. Friction clutches; reversing gearing. FERRANTI, Ltd. Sept., 7; 1954 [Sept. 19, 1953], No. 25897/53. Class 80(2) In an electromagnetic plate clutch with automatic compensation for clutch wear. the armature 26 of the stationary electromagnet 25 has a collar 30 determining its position when the magnet is de-energized and controls the clutch through a nut 31 screwed on a non-rotatable rod 14 and abutting against a shoulder 32 in the armature but urged rotationally relative to the rod, in the direction appropriate for pressing the clutch members 10, 11 together, by a torsion spring 33, the ends of which are secured to the nut 31 and to a disc 34 rotationally adjustable on the rod 14 and which is sufficiently strong to maintain the clutch members in light contact when the magnet is de-energized. The rod 14 is held against rotation by a flexible blade 15 secured to its lower end, the other end of the blade being fixed. The disc 34 is held in adjusted position by radial pins 35 held in axial grooves 39 in rod 14 by an encircling spring ring 38. Two identical clutches, with a common input member, may be used in reversing gearing. When the two clutches are de-energized or equally entergized, they slip to the same extent and no rotation of the driven member takes place. If one clutch is energized more than the other, the driven member is rotated in the one or the other direction.
