Abstract

610,327. Controlling change-speed gearing. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 18, 1945, No. 21144. Convention date, Sept. 11, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] In power means for the control of motor vehicle transmission gearing and of the kind comprising a double-acting fluid pressure motor operated jointly by a manual selector valve and by the vehicle throttle, the power element of the motor is connected to the gear-change lever by a compressible yieldable means and is actuated in three distinct stages in both directions of movement. As shown, a motor vehicle two-speed axle 10, Fig. 1, has mounted thereon a fluid motor 12, operated by engine suction, whose piston 16, Fig. 2, is slidable on the gear change rod 18 and is connected thereto through springs 24, 26 acting on collars 30, 34 fixed thereon. Casing stops 38, 40 limit the piston travel. The chambers 70, 72 defined by the piston 16 can be alternatively connected to the engine intake manifold 64, Fig. 1, through a pipe 62, a check valve 66, a storage tank 65, a two-way valve 39 and one or other of two pipes 56, 58 respectively, the valve 39 being manually operable and serving also to vent the idle pipe 56 or 58. As shown in Fig. 2, high gear is engaged. To change to low, the valve 39 is operated to admit suction to the chamber 72 and draw the piston 16 to the right to compress the spring 26 solid. No further action takes place until the accelerator pedal 41, Fig. 1, is released to unload the gear teeth when the piston 16 moves further to abut the stop 40 and in so doing neutralizes the gears, which on synchronization are meshed in low by the compressed spring 26 asserting itself. The reverse change is similarly effected. Change from high to low can also be effected by full depression of the accelerator as follows. Two ignition interrupter switches in series are provided, one, 46, on the gear change rod 18 and the other, 44, operable on full depression of the accelerator 41, which, when both are closed, earth the ignition coil primary winding 81 and cut out the engine. In high gear, the loading ball 88 of the switch 46 engages a cutaway 90 on the rod 18 and allows the switch to close so that full depression of the accelerator 41, allowed by spring lost-motion 78, cuts out the engine and unloads the gear teeth.
