Abstract
894,110. Change-speed control. WICKMAN, A. C. Dec. 16, 1959 [Jan. 1, 1959], No. 33/59. Class 80 (2). A vehicle change-speed gear comprises epicyclic gear units at the ends of an intermediate shaft 4 between driving and driven shafts 2, 3, the elements of the units being controlled by cone clutches 8, 16, 18 engageable by hydraulic pistons 10, 17, 19 under the control of a piston selector valve 32. The latter is engaged by a ball detent 38 engaging in circumferential grooves on the valve stem which is movable by a lever 36 connected to a speed-responsive governor and works in a ported sleeve 31 which is movable axially by the accelerator pedal 34, to modify the speed-responsive movement of the valve 32. The arrangement is such that with increasing depression of pedal 34 the speed at which the governor can effect an up change is increased, and conversely. A main control valve 41 is moved manually to the right for forward drive and to the left for reverse. In first gear liquid passes direct to piston 17 which engages clutch 16 to hold sun pinion 15; in second, flow is through passages a, c and piston 10 and clutch 8 lock annulus 5 ; in third, flow is through passages a, b and piston 19 and clutch 18 lock sun pinions 13, 15; while in fourth, piston 19 remains effective and piston 10 engages clutch 8, and shafts 2, 3 rotate at the same speed. For reverse, a brake 25 locks an annulus 24.
