Variable-speed and revening gearing comprises alined driving and driven shafts B, C and two parallel countershafts D, E provided with gears, one or more of which are slidable relatively to the others. First and second speeds are effected by way of gears D<3>, D<2> respectively on the shaft D. Third speed and reversed driving are effected by way of gears E<3>, E<2> respectively on the shaft E, the shafts D, E being so arranged that the gear E<2> can mesh simul. taneously with the gear D<3> and with a pinion B<1> fast on the shaft B. A fourth speed is a direct drive obtained by sliding a clutch and gear member B<3> on a feather on the shaft B into engagement with a clutch member upon a gear C' secured to the shaft C. Gears D<1>, E<1>of equal size fast upon the shafts D, E respectively are in constant mesh with the gear C. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the gears D<2>, D<3> slide together on feathers on the shaft D, and gears B<2>, E' adapted to be meshed with the sliding gears D<2>, B<3>, respectively, are fast on the shafts B, E. In a modification, the gears D<2>, D<3>, E<3> are separately slidable on feathers, and the gear B<2> is adapted to slide along with the gear B<3>. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the separately slidable gears D<2>, D<3>, E<2>, E' are constantly in mesh with their respectively companion gears B<2>, B'. D<3> B<3>. These gears are formed internally with four clutch claws d which,in the neutral position shown, turn idly in annular recesses d<11> in the shafts. To bring the corresponding speed into action, one of these gears is moved axially to bring its clutch claws into engagement with grooves d'.
