Abstract

1351770 Change-speed gear DAVID BROWN GEAR INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Oct 1972 [16 Oct 1971] 48233/71 Heading F2D A change-speed gear, which, in effect, combines an auxiliary two-speed gear with a fourspeed and reverse main gear to provide eight forward and two reverse ratios, comprises aligned input and output shafts 11, 13; a coaxial intermediate shaft in the form of a sleeve 16 rotatable on the output shaft, or of a separate shaft spacing input and output shafts; a layshaft 18 constantly driven by an input gear pair 24, 25, and providing direct and three reduced ratios to the intermediate shaft 16 through meshing wheel pairs 26 ... 31 selected by two double dog clutches 32, 33; and a parallel short countershaft 20, Fig. 2, driven either by a wheel 34 fast on the layshaft 18 meshing a wheel 35 clutched at 36 to the countershaft 20, or by a wheel 38 synchro-clutched at 43 to the intermediate shaft 16 and meshing a wheel 40 integral with the countershaft 20, the latter also having an integral wheel 41 meshing a wheel 42 synchro-clutched at 43 to the output shaft 13. With the countershaft clutch 36 engaged, the layshaft wheel 34 drives the countershaft 20 in the same direction as that of the input shaft 11, so that the double synchro-clutch 43 on the output shaft 13 provides two reverse ratios. With the countershaft clutch 36 disengaged, and the synchro-clutch 43 engaged with the wheel 38, the intermediate shaft 16 directly drives the output shaft 13 at any of the four layshaft ratios, whilst with the synchro-clutch 43 engaging the wheel 42, the intermediate shaft 16 drives the output 13 through the wheel pair 38, 40, countershaft 20 and wheel pair 41, 42, providing four additional ratios which may be all under-drive or may include over-drive depending on the sizes of the wheels 41, 42. A power take-off is clutched to the layshaft at 61.
