331,380. Hardy, W. G. June 24, 1929. Variable-speed gearing of the sliding spur-wheel type comprises an arrangement of a clutch j<1> for facilitating gear change in which the reversed drive is transmitted otherwise than through such clutch. The clutch is of a type hitherto used between the change-gearing and the road wheels of a vehicle outside the gear-box in which there is a baulking-ring such as j<6> which prevents automatic. re-arrangement of the clutch until the driving and driven members of the clutch synchronize as described in Specification 306,636. The driven shaft, which is in line with the driving-shaft b, is divided into two parts c, c<1> adapted to be positively connected by this clutch j<1>, which is disengaged during speed-changing by way of a rod j<5>. The reversed drive is effected in the configuration shown independently of the clutch through gear train #, #<1>, g, h<2>, h<3>, i. To bring in lowest forward speed, which is also independent of the clutch, reversing sleeve h is moved to the left and a sleeve g<1> is moved to the right so that countershaft pinion g<4> drives gear i fast on tail shaft c<1>. Three higher forward speeds are im. parted to the shaft c, so that the corresponding drives must pass through clutch j<1>. Two of these are countershaft drives through gears #<2>, #<3>, respectively, and top speed is direct through clutch #<7>, #<6>.
