Abstract
372,216. Variable-speed gearing. CATON, C. H., 6, St. Ives Mount, Armley, near Leeds. Sept. 29, 1931, No. 27051. [Class 80 (ii).] Two forward speeds and two reverse speeds are provided by spur gearing in which five wheels are used. Two loose shafts C, B, on which are splined wide toothed wheels 9, 12 and clutch members 8, 11, are mounted in antifriction bearings in a box A. The drive shaft 2 is integral with a wheel 4 adapted to be engaged by the clutch 8 when the latter is slid to the right. The wheel 4 is in constant mesh with a loose wheel 15 which may be clutched to the shaft B by the clutch 11. Each of the wheels 9, 12 if moved to the left continues to engage the other and also a fifth wheel 17 on a parallel shaft D from which power is transmitted as by worm gearing. The shaft C thus transmits. high speeds and the shaft B the low speeds. A gear having a similar range of speeds but using seven wheels is described in Specification 257,973, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variable-speed &c.].
