Abstract
161,444. Murray, T. B., and Albion Motor Car Co., Ltd. April 15, 1920. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-A driving- shaft A drives a final shaft B through two-speed gear-trains A<1> B<1>, A<2> B<2> in each of which there is a reduction of speed, first and second countershafts D, E, being also provided to give further gear reductions and a reverse speed. The driven shaft B carries a sliding gear-wheel C which has double clutch surfaces C' C<2>, whereby either of the gear-wheels B' B<2> can be clutched to the shaft to give the top and second speeds. For the reverse speed the clutches C' C<2>, are disengaged and a sliding gear-wheel D<2> on the shaft D, which is always driven from the shaft A through a train A<2> D', is moved into engagement with the wheel C, thus driving the shaft B. A low forward speed is obtained by sliding a broad wheel E' on the shaft E into engagement with the wheel C and with the wheel D<2> which is moved clear of the wheel C, the drive then passing through the trains A' D<1>, D<2> E<1> C.
