The driving-shaft A carries two flywheels V, V<1>, respectively capable of connection by means of friction clutches with chainwheels G, G<1> which are geared to chain-wheels F, F<1> on an intermediate shaft. This is made in two parts E, E<1> connected by a bevel-gear epicyclic train, the carrying - wheel P of which gears with the corresponding wheel P<1> of a similar train which serves as the compensating - gear and connects the two shafts D, D' from which the wheels of the vehicle are driven. Three speeds are obtainable according as one or the other, or both, the chain-wheels G, G<1> are driven. The parts E, E' of the intermediate shaft are prevented from turning backwards by roller ratchet gear interposed between them and the fixed casing. The clutches are operated by spring levers H, H<1> and rods K, K<1>, the rollers l, l<1> of which engage with cam segments M, M' operated by a hand-lever ; they also engage with a vertically-movable frame U connected to a treadle by which both clutches may be rapidly thrown out of gear. Reversing is effected by friction-wheels T, Q, the latter movable along the shaft D<1>, the direct rotation of which causes the rotation of the shaft D in the opposite direction. The movement of the wheel Q into gear disconnects the end of the shaft D' from its main portion, so that the wheel in gear with the shaft D is alone driven.
