Abstract

Motor road vehicles.- Relates to variable-speed gearing, suitable for motor - vehicles, of the class in which power is transmitted through a main clutch and either directly through a second clutch or through reducing - gearing picked up automatically by a freewheel device. The motor - shaft a, second shaft b. and third shaft c are arranged in line. The main friction clutch d is normally kept in engagement by a spring f, so coupling the shaft b to the shaft a. Inside a casing l there is journaled a countershaft m carrying a wheel n meshing constantly with a pinion p fast on the shaft b. A pinion o fast upon the shaft m meshes constantly with a wheel q, loose upon the shaft c and connected thereto by a ratchet clutch q<1>. The second friction clutch j<2> between the shafts b, c is normally held in engagement for direct driving by a spring j<3>. When this clutch j<2> is disengaged by a pedal-lever g and link-work i, k, a reduced-speed drive through the countershaft m automatically comes into action. Further movement causes the lever g to strike a lever s upon a rock-shaft h and so to disconnect the clutch d. When the shaft c has been disconnected, its motion may be arrested by a conical brake-member r. The shaft may be coupled to a further change-speed &c. device t. Specification No. 727, A.D. 1904, [Abridgment Class Mechanism &c.], is referred to.
