Variable-speed and reversing gearing having a driving-gear A, a driven gear B, and an intermediate gear C, is provided with means for con- 'trolling the planetary motion of the gear C comprising two opposed direction-reversing devices. The gears A, B are secured to driving and driven shafts 1, 2, respectively, and the gear or gears C are supported in a carrier 4, which carries also a bevel-wheel D'. Bevel-pinions 5, turning upon fixed spindles and gearing the wheel D' to a bevel-wheel 7<a> upon a loose disk 7, constitute one reversing-device. The other reversing-device is a variable-speed friction gearing connecting the disk 7 to a disk 9 keyed to the shaft 1. Friction idlers 8 connect the disks 7, 9, and the variation in speed is effected by varying the inclinations of these idlers, which are suitably mounted and geared together for the purpose. When the idlers 8 are in the position indicated by the lines XX, the carrier 4 is driven at the same speed as the shaft 1. In this configuration, a clutch member 11 sliding on feathers on the boss of the wheel A may be caused to grip a surface D<2> upon the carrier 4, so as to relieve the friction gearing. By tilting the idlers 8 sufficiently, the shaft 2 may be driven reversely. In a modified arrangement, the carrier 4 is secured to the shaft 1, and the bevel-gear A is connected to the controlling- gearing.
