Abstract

649,711. Variable-speed friction gear. HOLDING METAPIC. Nov. 12, 1947, No. 10532. Convention date; Nov. 9, 1943. [Class 80(ii)] To balance load-reactions, driving and driven toric friction discs 10, 16 are drivingly connected by pairs of friction rollers 34, which are in driving contact with each other on conical tracks 5 and with the toric discs on different curved tracks 7, the mean points of the three contact-zones lying on a straight line. The discs 10, 16 rotate in the same direction, but opposite rotation may be obtained by means of an additional roller-set. In the spinning- frame drive shown, the toric discs 16, 10 are respectively in driving relation with a driven shaft 17 and a driving sleeve 11 carrying fast and loose pulleys 13, 14, the discs being urged axially together by torque-responsive end-loading 40. The roller-pairs 34 are mounted in housings 24, which, for varying the speed-ratio, pivot in a fixed frame 21, and are connected for movement in unison by bevel-toothed segments 25, one housing 24 being operated by a control-lever 27. To permit load-balance between the roller-pairs, the spindles 36 of each roller are mounted in sub-frames 33 bearing at 31, 32 in balance-beams 30 having inner spindles 29, concentric with the spindles 28 of the main housings 24, in relation to which they may be adjusted by set-screws 39 acting on one balancebeam 30 of each pair, the other being free to swing to permit load-balance.
