Abstract

443,808. Variable - speed friction gearing. CHRISTIANSEN, E., Food Machinery Works, Factory Centre, Lifford Lane, King's Norton, Birmingham. March 13, 1935, No. 7754. [Class 80 (ii)] Variable - speed friction gearing comprises coaxial toric discs 3, 3<1>, Fig. 1, either of which may drive the other through non planetary rollers 4 adapted to tilt, to vary the speed ratio. Between the discs 3, 3<1> and their respective shafts 2, 2<1> are similar torque loading devices 5, 7 for producing traction friction. These loading devices have coacting cam faces 9, 9<1>, Fig. 3, in pairs oppositely directed so that the drive can pass between each disc and its shaft in either direction with equal facility. A spring 25 produces initial friction. The rollers 4 are supported in a frame 11, Fig. 5, which is free to float axially sliding on a fixed rail 23. The rollers are revolubly supported in cradles 10 which are geared together at 15. Speed changes are effected by turning a hand-wheel 26, Fig. 1, which moves a nut 18 which engages an arm 16 on one of the cradles 10 so that the cradles are tilted in unison about their own axes.
