Abstract
283,934. Erban, R. Jan. 20, 1927, [Convention date]. Variable-speed friction gearing of the continuously-variable type comprises rollers 3 supported on relatively fixed pivotal axes so that in changing speed they can turn and creep spirally to the new gear position. Planetary rollers 3, Fig. 12, turn on bearings 15 which swivel upon axles 16 fast upon a planet spindle 4. In changing speed the rollers 3 automatically become inclined and rull spirally on conical gear surfaces 1, 2. The invention is specially applicable to the type of planetary or other gearing in which the rollers 3 are adapted to be tilted about axles 10, Figs. 3 and 5, so as to gear upon different tracks upon torus surfaces 1, 2. In a form shown in Fig. 3, there is a definite pivotal axle 16 supported by a frame 11 which is tilted about the trunnions 10 by suitable means. The axle 16 is advanced against the direction of rotation shown by arrow 8. Its line intersects the two paths of the roller on the surfaces 1, 2. The bearing 15 of the roller 3 does not turn with the roller but swivels automatically upon the axle 16 in changing speed. In another type of arrangement, shown in Fig. 5, there is no actual axle but the roller-supporting bearing 23 is spherical and is free to pivot about a virtual axle 9, 9 by inclined slots 29 about a bolt 4 fast to the frame 11. In a form shown in Fig. 10, the virtual axle 9, 9 is obtained by constraining the free spherical bearing 23 between plates 44 with knife-edges. In this form, when the rotation of the rollers 3 is changed to that indicated by the arrow 18, Fig. 3, the plates 44 are carried round until arrested by a fixed stop 25 to produce a new virtual axis 19, 19.
