Abstract

476,589. Variable - speed friction gearing. ARTER, J. June 11, 1936, No. 16359. Convention date, June 15, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed friction gear comprises friction wheels 8 and 9 on driving and driven shafts 6 arid 7 respectively with intermediate rollers 13, 14. The rollers 13 and 14 rotate on axles 17, 18 which are swung about pivots 19 and 20 to alter the position of the intermediate rollers on the driving and driven wheels 8 and 9 to vary the ratio of the gearing. The pivots 19 and 20 are secured to a common member 21 which is free to move in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the gear on guide pins 22, 24 to equalize automatically the load on the rollers 13 and 14. A small amount of lateral movement of axles 17, 18 is provided by means of pins 28, 29 in blocks 26, 27 respectively to allow the friction rollers 13 and 14 to take up positions to compensate the pressures against the two wheels 8 and 9, which pressures are maintained by a spring 12 acting against the wheel 8.
