Abstract
18,060. Lanchester, F. W. Oct. 10. Friction gearing. - Relates to variable - speed epicyclic friction gearing in which, it is stated, the loss of efficiency in transmission depends upon the difference in speed of the two parts and not on the absolute speed of either, there being no loss when the driving and driven parts rotate at the same speed. A roller A, on the driving-shaft B, and a similar roller C, secured on a fixed stud E, are geared together by discs G, so mounted as to be capable of rotating on their axes in a casing P, J, Q. The part P of this casing is mounted on a feather on the driven shaft R, and may be moved endways to an extent equal to the radius of the discs. In the position shown, there is no rolling motion, and the cage and driven shaft rotate at the same speed on the driving-shaft. When the cage is moved to the other extreme position, driving ceases, the discs merely rotating on their axes ; at intermediate points, intermediate speeds are transmitted. The discs G are pressed up by spring discs K acting through roller bearings L.
