Abstract
29,132. Bell, L. Dec. 18. Variable-speed friction gearing.-The driving and driven shafts, 1, 2, Fig. 1, are in alinement, and a friction disk 8 fixed on the driving-shaft engages friction wheels 23, 23a fixed on cross-shafts 22, 22<a> mounted in stationary bearings. Two such cross-shafts are shown, but any desired member may be employed, radiating from a common centre. Each crossshaft carries a sliding friction wheel 24 engaging a disk 25 on the driven shaft 2, and the various wheels 24 are traversed simultaneously across the disk 25 to vary the speed. To provide for reversing, the disk 25 is loose on the driven shaft and engages a pair of friction wheels 31 mounted on a frame 30 which can revolve freely on the shaft 2, the wheels 31 also engaging a disk 33 connected to the shaft 2 by a clutch 34. The frame 30 is ordinarily held stationary by a spring catch 39, in which case the shaft 2 is driven in the same direction as the shaft 1. To reverse the drive, the catch 39 is pulled out of engagement, and the disk 25 locked to the shaft 2 by a clutch 40, the wheels 31 running idle. Clutch members 41, 42 are provided to give a solid drive when desired, the disk 33 being withdrawn from the wheels 31 at the same time. If no reverse drive is desired, the parts 31, 33 are omitted. A modified arrangement giving a reverse drive at one speed is shown in Fig. 4. A shaft 47 supported on a rocking arm carries friction wheels 45, 46, adapted to engage respectively with an annular web 43 formed on the driving disk 8, and the edge of the driven disk 25. When the wheels 45, 46 are brought into action, the axial spring pressure (produced by any suitable means) on the disks 8, 25 is relieved.
