Abstract

18,494. Cosserat, W. A. P. Aug. 12. Variable-speed friction gearing comprises a driving-disk 2, Fig. 1, engaged by a pair of rollers 3, which are in the same plane and turn loosely upon pins 4 on a movable frame 5. Another like pair of rollers 8, turning loosely on pivots 9 upon the frame 5, engage and drive a driven disk 7. The disks 2 and 7 may be toothed externally for engaging driving-chains. The power passes from the disks 3 to the disks 8 by way of disks 11, which are carried by and are adapted to turn with a transverse shaft 10. Adjustable springs 12, which press the disks 11 inwards into engagement, also turn with the shaft 11, which remains in a fixed position when the frame 5 is moved to vary the speed-ratio. In a modified arrangement specially suitable for motorvehicles, a sleeve is adapted to be turned about the shaft 10 and thereby to thrust the disks 11 apart to disconnect the gearing. Balance gearing may be combined with the driven disk 7. The gearing may be multiplied for large powers. Reversed driving may be provided for by allowing the rollers 3 to be slid to the other side of the axis of the wheel 2. In a modification shown in Fig. 5, the driving-disk is dispensed with. The rollers 3 are in mutual contact and are driven from a toothed gear 41. Reversed driving is effected by turning the pair of rollers 3 through half a revolution about the axis of the gear 41. The disconnecting-means are shown at 30, 34.
