Abstract

104,161. Morrison, W. Feb. 14, 1916, [Convention date]. Variable-speed and reversing-gearing.-In transmission gearing for use on motor-vehicles &c., the load is driven through combined epicyclic two or more speed gearing and epicyclic reversing-gearing, which is itself preferably driven from the engine through a dynamo-electric clutch of the kind described in Specification 27617/13, [Class 35, Dynamo-electric generators &c.]. The driving- shaft 2 is driven from the engine E through a leather coupling G and a clutch F' of the kind referred to, and is supported in an oil-containing casing 1 with sediment chambers 6. The shaft 2 carries a boss 7 connected by a one-way clutch 8 to a drum 9, which carries a sun-wheel 15 gearing with a planet-wheel 41 integral with another wheel 42 gearing with a sun-wheel 43 on a sleeve 46. The wheels 41, 42 are carried by a drum 37 adapted to be connected by a Weston plate clutch 20, 34 with the drum 9 for the solid drive, the clutch being normally engaged by means of a spring 24 bearing against the armature 27 of an electro-magnet 68. One side of the armature carries the presser-plate 33 of the Weston clutch, and the other side carries teeth 28, Fig. 6, engaging teeth 65 on the stationary magnet 68 for the low speed. The armature 27 is connected to a ring 30, turning with the drum 37, by a one-way clutch 29. The driven sleeve 46 of the speed gear curries a pinion 47 gearing with planet-wheels 48 carried on a carrier 50 and gearing with an annulus 61 secured to a drum 60 on the load-driving sleeve 4, the gearing forming a reversing-gear. A spring 55 normally engages clutch teeth 58 on the carrier 50 with teeth 59 on the drum 60 for direct drive, teeth on an armature 51, oppositely inclined to the teeth 28, engaging teeth on a stationary electro-magnet 70 for the reverse. Thus a reverse may be obtained at either speed of the two-speed gear. The overrunning clutches 8, 29 prevent shocks on the engine due to the momentum of the driven parts. In order to obtain more than two speeds, a series of similar speed gears may be employed, the driven part of one driving the driving-part of the next. Storage batteries 0 for starting the engine by means of the clutch F<1> are provided. Switches 86 - - 89, arranged on a box M on the steering-pillar, control the clutch F<1> and the electro-magnets 68, 70 through mechanism of the kind described in Specifications 13176/15, [Class 35, Dynamo-electric generators &c.], and 100,639 contained in a box N.
