Abstract

19,755. Pollard, G., and Menco-Elma Syndicate. Sept. 14. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing comprises spur gearing controlled by electromagneticallyactuated clutches and brakes, the whole forming a single unit. A driving-shaft 9 carries a gear 7 meshing with planetary gears 20 supported in a carrier 23 secured to a. driven shaft 8. Other planetary gears 19, 21 rotate with the gears 20. The gears 19 mesh with a loose central gear 30 and with a loose internally toothed ring 4. The gears 20, 21 mesh with loose internally toothed rings 5, 6 respectively. The elements 4, 5, 6, 30 have armatures 32, 35, 36, 27 respectively, adapted to be attracted and held against rotation by fixed electromagnets with coils 10, 11, 12, 31. A claw-clutch sleeve 17 slides on the periphery of the ring 4 and is adapted to engage a clutch element 18 on the ring 5 for solid driving, the sleeve 17 being actuated by a coil 16. Reduced forward geared drives are effected by exciting the coils 10, 11, 12 respectively. Reversed driving is effected by exciting the coil 31. In another arrangement, a more complex arrangement of gearing and rotary electro-magnets is employed.
