Abstract
8385. Rudge-Whitworth, Ltd., Pugh, J. V., and Blair, W. April 7. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. - A variablespeed gear for cycle hubs &c. is characterized by primary and secondary planet-pinions mounted upon the driving-member and intermeshing over a part of their length, an annular driven member and a single controllable sun-pinion whereby the changes of speed are effected. In its extreme right-hand position, the sun-pinion is held stationary by engagement with fixed ratchet teeth p, and the hub is driven at low speed through the primary planetpinions k, the secondary pinions m, and the annular gear s, which, as shown, is in one-way clutch connexion with the hub shell. For the direct drive, the sun-pinion is moved to its central position, where it meshes with both sets of planet-pinions so that the train is locked and the gear turns as a whole. Further movement of the sun-pinion brings its teeth u into engagement with fixed teeth v, and the hub is then driven at high speed through the secondary planet-pinions, the primary pinions running idly.
