Abstract
5366. Heilmann, J. J. March 15, 1909, [Convention date]. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-Relates to variable-speed gearing of the type in which toothed wheels secured to a driving-shaft are always in mesh with wheels loose on a parallel driven shaft, and connected thereto by trains of epicyclic gearing which are alternatively brought into action by brakes. As shown in Fig. 3, gears 1 on the driving-shaft 2 mesh with gears 3, which are connected by sleeve 5 to gears 6 loose on the driven shaft 4. Planetary gears 7 carried upon brake drums 9 comprise two parts of different diameters, which mesh with the gears 6 and also with gears 13 secured to the shaft 4. Each gear train is brought into--action by tightening a corresponding brake 11. Reversal may be effected by having such gears as 1<1>, 3<1> connected by an idler, or by using the alternative form of epicyclic train shown in Fig. 2. The brake-drums may be arranged with their axis at right-angles to the shaft 4, bevel-gearing intervening.
