Abstract

540,054. Expanding pulley gearing. SAMCOE HOLDING CORPORATION. April 8, 1940, No. 6343. Convention date, May 18, 1939. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Groups XIII and XVI] Fabric in long lengths is dried by passage over a series of reels while hot air is passed through it, the speed of the reels being automatically adjusted so that the fabric is not subjected to tension as it advances. The fabric passes over a cylinder 11 to the reels, the first of which has the same peripheral speed as the cylinder 11. The reels are driven by a variable speed motor 29 having a flat belt 33 extending over a pulley 34 mounted on a spring-controlled pivoted arm 35. Motion is transmitted from the belt 33 through pulleys 39, 40 to a speedreducing mechanism 41' which drives the reel, and also, through belts 44, 46, the cylinder 11. Each of the subsequent reels is driven by automatically controlled variable speed mechanism. Pulleys 48, 50 are connected together and mounted on a common fixed spindle 49, pulley 50 driving pulley 52 mounted on a spindle 53 which also carries a variable speed pulley 54, Fig. 9. This pulley comprises a member 55 urged by spring 57 towards a co-operating member 56 so that the effective diameter of the groove for the V-belt is varied. Pulley 54 is connected by belt 60 to pulley 61 of a speed-reducing mechanism 63, the output shaft 7 of which carries the reel. The speed control comprises a roller 64 carried by a counter-balanced lever 65 bearing against the fabric between the reels. Any variation in the tension of the fabric rotates the spindle 66 of the lever 65, together with an integral arm 68 carrying bearing 69 for the stub shaft 53. An arm 70 carries counterweight 71 to balance the roller 64. An idle pulley 72 takes up slack in the belt. Any variation in the relative positions of the shafts 62, 53 due to movement of the roller 64 causes a variation in the pitch of the pulley 54 and a change in speed of shaft 62 and therefore of the reel 6 in accordance with the temporary condition of the fabric, so that the fabric is advanced without being subjected to any substantial tension.
