Abstract

609,452. Covering wires. THORNTON (TEDDINGTON), Ltd., A. A., and THORN. TON, A. A. March 14, 1946, No. 8029. [Class 109] In a machine for covering wire, the wire 16 and covering material 17, particularly a paper material, are drawn through the fixed member 14 of an epicyclic mechanism and pass over a guide means 24 disposed about the axis of the movable member 18 of the epicyclic mechanism, so that, in operation, the movable member 18 rotates about its axis, thereby rotates the guide means 24 and draws the wire and covering material through the fixed member 14 and, since the member 18 also rotates about the axis of the fixed member 14, simultaneously twists the wire and covering material together to form a composite strand. In the form shown, the epicyclic mechanism comprises the usual sun-and-planet gear, but other arrangements may be used such as an internal epicyclic gear. The planet-wheel 18 is rotatably carried upon a stub shaft 19 fixed to a face-plate 5 which with a face-plate 4, joined together by bars 6, forms a rotatable cage. A guide roller 20 and an arm 23, which carries the guide roller 24, are both also supported on the stub shaft 19. A further guide roller 22 is provided. The composite strand of wire and paper from the guide roller 24 passes over roller 20 to roller 22, back to roller 20 and finally to roller 22 from whence it passes over guide rollers 25 mounted on one of the bars 6 of the cage. The cage is driven from a source of power 8 through pulleys and belting. The sun pinion 14 is formed on the end of a fixed tube-like member 12 passing centrally through the face-plate 5, through which the wire and covering material are guided from reels on supports 26. Crepe paper strip may be used; with ordinary paper strip, a wetting agent is preferably continuously supplied thereto. The machine may also provide a collecting bobbin 32 for the finished strand adapted to be rotated by a mechanism which is non-positive in its driving action, such as by slack belting 34 having its tautness adjustable by a controlled jockey pulley 36 or by a slipping plate clutch 39 embodied in the bobbin drive.
