Spindle driving apparatus. - Relates to the driving of inclined spindles in continuous spinning and twisting machines by means of tapes, flat bands, or belts. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, groups of four spindles 3 - - 6 are driven by a drum 1 or pulleys so arranged that the driving portion of the belt is perpendicular or approximately so to the axis of the spindle 3, the tension pulley 7 is movable about an axis perpendicular to the portion of the belt which runs therefrom to the spindle 3, the tension pulley 7 is movable belt is altered but slightly as the pulley 7 moves, and a directive pulley or drum 8 is applied so that the belt is perpendicular or approximately so to the axes of the spindles 5, 6. The pulley or drum 8 may be freely rotatable, or may be driven positively from the drum 1 or by a shaft arranged in the machine, and it may be arranged to act as a tension pulley. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the spindles are arranged in quincunx order and the pulley 7 is inclined so that the spindles may be driven in either direction. Two' pulleys or drums may be used to direct the belt between the spindles 4, 5. The arrangement may be applied to any other grouping of spindles and to single-sided machines.
