Abstract

779,686. Tension regulating means. HUCK, W. F., ALBRECHT, A. J., and WEKEMAN, S. N. [trading as HUCK CO.]. June 8, 1955, No. 16434/55. Class 120 (2). [Also in Group XVI] A device for maintaining a predetermined constant tension on a web or strand of material W comprises a frame 26, a roller 18 about which the material W passes, a shaft 16 rotatably carried by at least one arm 12 pivoted to the frame, the roller 18 being secured to the shaft 16 for rotation about an axis parallel to the pivotal axis of the arm 12, a driven pulley 20 on the shaft, a variable diameter pulley 36 mounted on the frame, a belt 34 connecting the pulleys, and adjustable springs 46, 48 urging the arm 12 to a position at which the forces imposed by the tension of the material W and the tension in the belt 34 are balanced. The tensions of springs 46 and 48 can be readily adjusted to provide a desired tension in the belt 34 are balanced. The tensions of springs 46 and 48 can be readily adjusted to provide a desired tension in the material W. Variations in material tension cause the arm 12 to rock thus varying the tension of the belt 34 and altering the effective diameter of the pulley 36, thereby increasing or decreasing the speed of the roller 18 to compensate for the tension variation in the material. In a modification, particularly for tensioning wire, cable, or other types of single or multiple strand material the material W, Fig. 4 is wound several times around a drum 56 driven through a pulley 60. A variable diameter pulley 62 drives the pulley 60 through the belt 34. The pulley 60 and drum 56 are supported on a shaft 54 carried by an arm 50 keyed to a shaft 14 rotatable in frame members 26, 28. The arm 50 can be rocked against the action of adjustable springs 46, 48 spaced apart on an arm 42 attached to the arm 50, the adjacent spring ends engaging a fixed abutment 64. The tension of the material W is maintained substantially constant in the same manner as the previous embodiment.
