Class 100(1) A mechanism for maintaining a constant tension in a moving web comprises a pair of co-operating feed rollers between which the web passes, a driven pulled and a variable diameter pulley for each roller, a driving connection between each roller and its associated driven pulley, and a V-belt interconnecting the driven and driving pulleys associated with each roller. As shown, a plurality of webs B pass between rollers 78 and 79 carried by shafts 99 and 100 mounted in levers 86, 86<SP>1</SP> pivoted by pins 87, 87<SP>1</SP> on arms 83, 83<SP>1</SP> respectively. The arms 83, 83<SP>1</SP> are mounted on a shaft 82 to permit pivotal movement of the arms 83, 83<SP>1</SP> against the action of spring 94, 95 on rods 90, 90<SP>1</SP>, the tensions of the springs being adjustable by handwheels 96, 96<SP>1</SP>. The rollers 78 and 79 are made up of halfrollers 101, 102 and 103. 104, having flanges 105 engaging the web B. Each half-roller is driven by a pulley 106 driven through a belt 107 by a variable diameter pulley 114 comprising two flanges pressed together by spring, not shown. Variations in web tension causes rocking of the arms 83, 83<SP>1</SP>, thus tightening or loosening the belts 107 to effect a reduction or increase respectively in the speed of the rollers 78 and 79 to compensate for such variations in web tension. Movements of the arms 83 83<SP>1</SP> are damped by pistons 191, 191<SP>1</SP> engaging cylinders 190, 190<SP>1</SP>.
