Class 100(1) A web. tension control mechanism comprises a frame, a carriage, a pair of parallel guide rollers rotatably mounted on the carriage on fixed parallel axes and geared together for rotation in opposite directions, the carriage being movable in the direction of a line perpendicular to the axes and biased towards one extremity of its movement, a variable speed drive for the rollers, and means for adjusting the variable speed drive in response to movements of the carriage. Rollers 40, 42 are mounted in side plates 36 and 38 journalled on shafts 32, 34 supported by arms 24, 28. The arms 24, 28 are carried by shafts 20, 22 rotatable in frames 16, 18 such that the rollers 40, 42 can be displaced together to the right against the action of a spring 44 the tension of which may be adjusted by a nut 50 to impose a desired tension of the web 10. The roller 42 has an extended shaft 58 carrying a pulley 60 driven by a V-belt 62 passing around a variable diameter pulley 64 of the Reeves type. The pulley 64 is driven by a shaft 68 driven in synchronism with a machine. e.g. a printing machine. The roller 42 is rotated counter-clockwise to feed the web 10 in the direction of the arrows, the web being passed around the lower side of the roller 42 between the rollers 42 and 40 and then around the roller 40. The roller 40 is driven clockwise by a pinion 54 engaging a pinion 56 on the roller shaft 42. The rollers 40, 42 are urged to the left by the spring 44 and to the right bv tension in the belt 62, while variations in the tension of the web 10 cause movement of the rollers in the appropriate direction to vary the tension in the belt 62 and thus vary the speed of the rollers 40, 42 to restore the web tension to a predetermined value.
