Abstract

969,646. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 1, 1961 [Nov. 3, 1960], No. 39055/61. Heading B6B. Sheets 13 are separated from the top of a pile by a friction roller 14 and guided by plates 77, 78 between a friction member 22 and an opposed travelling friction belt 11, the member 22 moving in a direction to forward a separated sheet along guides 80 to a pair of forwarding rollers 82, 83, and the belt 11 moving at a slower speed in the opposite direction to prevent more than one sheet being forwarded, and mechanism is provided for automatically maintaining a constant tension in the restraining belt 11 and to allow only a limited movement of that belt away from the member 22. The coefficient of friction between the belt 11 and the sheets 13 is not as great as that between the member 22 and the sheets, but is greater than that between two sheets. The member 22 is of rubber and is mounted on a driven disc 21, and has transverse recesses 23 on its outer surface. The belt 11 has longitudinally extending serrations on its outer surface, and runs around a driven roll 26 and idler rolls 27, 28, 29, 30. The roller 28 is mounted on a pin 56 urged by a spring 57 to engage the face of a cam 53, the pin being carried on a pivoted arm 58. The cam 53 is secured to a rotatably mounted shaft 41 which is constrained to rotate clockwise by a weight 50 on an arm 51 secured to the shaft; thus, the belt 11 is tensioned, and cannot be wedged away from the member 22 more than the amount sufficient to pass one sheet only. The shaft 41 can be rotated counterclockwise to release the tension in the belt 11, by means of a lever 68 which is rotatably mounted on the shaft and has a finger 66 thereon which can engage either of two stops on the cam 53.
