Abstract

665,762. Feeding sheets. MENLEY & JAMES, Ltd. April 21, 1950 [April 21, 1949], No. 10647/49. Class 100 (i). An automatic sheet-feeding device comprises a magazine 1 having a horizontal floor upon which the edges of a stack of sheets can rest cross-wise of the magazine and along which the sheets can be advanced, a wiper 9 being adapted to bear against the front sheet of the stack and operated by a rock shaft 17 through linkage including a frictional pivot connection 14, 15, rotation of the rock shaft in one direction pressing the wiper against and across the face of the stack to displace the front sheet edgewise from the magazine and in the opposite direction returning the wiper back across the face of the stack with sufficient movement away from the front face of the stack so that there is less or no pressure thereon, the displaced sheet being accepted and conveyed away by one or more pairs of acceptor wheels 5, 7. The stack of sheets 2 are held into contact with the wiper 9, which is rubber faced, by a weighted number 3 and the sheets are transferred by the wheels 5, 7, assisted by a guide 20 to a band conveyer 6, which transfers them to the platen of a printing press. The wiper 9 is fixed to an arm 11 which is pivoted to a lever 12 having a roller 21 at the pivot. The other end of the lever 12 is connected by the frictional pivot connection to a crank 16 on the rock shaft 17, the connection comprising a leather sleeve 14 engaging a shaft 15 on the crank 16, the sleeve being contained in a two part eye-piece 13 on the lever 12 and the pressure being adjusted by a bolt 19. This connection keeps the wiper in contact with the front sheet on the feeding stroke and moves it away on the return stroke, the roller 21 riding on the front wall of the magazine and a guide 22 respectively to position the wiper. In a modification, the pad wiper shown may be replaced by a rubber roller which is kept from rotation during the feeding stroke by a ratchet-and-pawl device which allows rotation during the return stroke. An adjustable resilient stop 24 comprising a rubber strip 28 projecting from and sandwiched between two metal strips is positioned above the stack of sheets to ensure that only the first sheet is fed to the rollers 5, 7.
