Abstract
528,271. Feeding sheets. DAVIDSON MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. May 2,1939, No. 13095. Convention date, May 2, 1938. [Class 100 (i)] Sheets are fed to a printing or like machine from a fanned out pile 25 arranged in a magazine 14 with adjustable sides 23, 24 by means of an intermittently rotated friction roller 26 of soft rubber arranged to engage the pile at the centre and to separate the top sheets successively in coaction with a movable retard member such as a hard rubber roller 27 which acts to keep back the sheets below the top one. The roller 26 is carried by a shaft 30 which is rotated intermittently by a rack 13 reciprocated from the printing-machine to which the sheets are fed and a gear wheel 28 which drives the shaft 30 by a free-wheel clutch 29. The retard roller is fixed to a shaft 34 mounted in eccentric bearings 35, and the shaft 34 is normally set by means of an adjustable stop which engages a spring-pressed arm 38 on it so as to separate the retard member from the roller 26 by a distance slightly less than the thickness of a sheet. Should two sheets a, b, Fig. 6, pass between the members 26, 27 the retard member is first moved to the left but then tends to return under spring action and so carries back the second sheet with it. The roller 26 feeds the separated sheet into the bite of feed rollers 54, 56 constantly driven. The upper rollers are mounted in angularly adjustable spring-pressed arms 58, and the lower rollers are rubber covered wooden rollers mounted on the shaft of a tape conveyer 17 which feeds the sheets to front stops 18. The tapes 52 of the conveyer 17 are inclined slightly towards an adjustable side guide 53 which controls the lateral position of the sheets. The rotation of the shaft 26 is controlled by a spring brake which prevents it from'rotating as the tail end of a sheet leaves the rollers 26, 27.
