Abstract
227,690. Bullock, C. A. H. April 24, 1924. Sheet - separators; pile tables and supports.-Sheets are fed to printing and like machines, such as that described in Specification 190,544, by separating the sheets from a. stack of sheets arranged between adjustable side guides on an inclined feed board 1, the edges of the sheets resting on a pivoted clip 8 provided with a bent lip 8<a>. The separation of the top sheet is effected by displacing the pack bodily in the plane of the sheets by giving the clip 8 an oscillating motion by means of a lever arm on its shaft 9, which has a depending lug engaged by a serrated cam giving the clip a vibrating as well as an oscillating motion, so that the pack is simultaneously raised along the surface of the board 1 and joggled to facilitate separation of the sheets. When the stack has been raised to its uppermost position, a friction pad 21 on a shaft 22, carried by a reciprocating carriage 23, is moved into contact with the stack, and the stack is then permitted by its operating cam to fall by gravity, the pad 21 preventing the return of the top sheet and thus separating it from the stack. The feed board 1 is then moved in a clockwise direction about an upper pivot 3, and so the front edge of the stack is gripped by the lip 8a and the carriage 23 then descends and the pad 21 feeds the top sheet over the lips 8<a> and allows it to pass to the printing or other machine. The pivotal movement of the board 1 is controlled by a spring-pressed lever 17 provided with a projection 15 operated by a cam 14 to move the board 1 in a clockwise direction. Normallv a spring keeps the roller 18 on the lever 17 out of contact with the board 1, and the board can then move in a counterclockwise direction under the action of gravity to an extent which is limited by a rack 38 having sloping teeth engaging a fixed abutment to limit the backward movement '1f the board 1. The pad 21 is mounted on a shaft 22 geared to a sector 26 on a shaft 27, Fig. 6, acted on by a spring which normally tends to move the pad 21 into engagement with the stack. this movement being prevented by a pawl 29 on a larger pawl 30 controlled by a strong spring 33 for keeping the pawl 29 in engagement with the sector gear 26. The. connecting-rod 32 for reciprocating the carriage 23 acts through the pawl 30. When the carriage 23 engages a fixed stop 34, the pawl 30 is moved to release the pawl 29 from the gear 26 and permit the pad 21 to contact with the stack. On the return movement of the carriage 23, the gear 26 is re-set by the action of a stop 35 on a projecting arm 36. Specification 218,466 is referred to.
