Abstract

1387817 Feeding sheets POST OFFICE 12 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 14647/71 Heading B8R [Also in Division F2] A device for separating sheets 2 from the bottom of a pile 1 comprises a driven friction belt 3 upon which the pile rests and which fowards the lowest sheet to the resilient nip formed between the belt 3 and friction roller 6 which is urged towards the belt by spring 11. The roller 6 is mounted for free rotation on the axle 7 by means of bearings packed with high viscosity grease such that the roller is rotated at a lower peripheral speed than the speed of belt 3, thereby holding back any additional sheets separated from the pile by the belt. In an alternative embodiment, not illustrated, the roller 6 may be replaced by a plurality of rollers mounted on a single or on separate shafts, one roller being mounted on greasepacked bearings and being coupled for rotation to the other roller(s). In a further embodiment, not illustrated, roller 6 may be replaced by a pair offrusto-conical rollers which bow the sheet as it is forwarded.
