Abstract
922,780. Feeding sheets. CHEMISCHE FABRIEK L. VAN DER GRINTEN N.V. Jan. 25, 1961 [Feb. 2, 1960], No. 2990/61. Class 100 (1). Sheets are separated sequentially from a stack by a pair of opposed friction rollers 1, 4, or belts, which are driven in the same direction, but the member 4 is driven through a slipping clutch which is so adjusted that, when a single sheet passes between the members, the member 4 is driven in the opposite direction by frictional forces exerted by the sheet on the member 4. Fig. 1 shows a stack of sheets 16 on a fixed curved support 15, and a front gate 21 which normally only allows the bottom sheet to pass into the nip of rollers 1, 4. The roller 1 is constantly driven, and a gear on the shaft thereof drives, through an idler gear 6, a gear which is rotatably mounted on the shaft 3 of the roller 4 but coupled thereto by an adjustable slipping clutch. The roller 4 is driven at a faster peripheral speed than the roller 1. When a single sheet passes between the rollers, the sheet is urged over a guide 17 towards feed rollers 18, 19, and the friction exerted by the sheet overcomes the action of the clutch and reverses the direction of rotation of the roller 4. When, however, two superposed sheets enter the nip of the rollers 1, 4, the friction between the two sheets cannot overcome the clutch, and the roller 4 returns the top sheet to the stack: the bottom sheet is then fed by the rollers over the guide 17. The rollers 4, 19 are urged towards the rollers 1, 18, respectively, by gravity, and the roller 18 is driven from the roller 1 by a rope 20 and pulleys. In Fig. 3, sheets 16 are separated from the top of a stack by a friction roller 24 driven from the roller 1 by a rope 25 and pulleys. As before, the roller 4 is driven from the roller 1 through gears and a slipping clutch, and the roller 4 is urged towards the roller 1 by springs 36 and adjustment screws 23. The top sheet is urged by the roller 24 through a gap between a bent lip on a front plate 33 and the roller 1, into the nip between the rollers 1, 4, and the friction exerted by the sheet overcomes the clutch and reverses the rotation of the roller 4, so that the sheet is fed away between curved guides 34, 35. When two superposed sheets pass through the gap, the roller 4 returns the bottom sheet to the stack. The stack is supported on a table 28 which is urged upwardly by a rack bar 31 engaged by a pinion 32 which is driven by a motor through a slipping clutch. The roller 4 in both cases comprises spaced discs, but may be a solid roller : also, the rollers 1, 4 may be replaced by endless friction belts.
