Abstract
1306595 Feeding sheets XEROX CORP 30 June 1970 [3 July 1969 (2)] 31609/70 Heading B8R Apparatus for feeding sheets one by one from the top of a stack of sheets includes means for preventing separation of more than one sheet at a time, such means comprising at each leading corner (a) a plate 101 engaging a front corner of the topmost sheet and carried by a vertically movable support 114 so that the plate 101 remains in contact with the top of the stack as sheets are fed forward from the stack and (b) a plate 102 engaging the front of the stack. As shown in Fig. 3, the plate 102 is adjusted by screw and bolt connections 116, 117 on the support 114, so that an upper knife edge 103 thereon is spaced from the plate 101 a distance allowing only one sheet to pass through the gap between the plates 101, 102. A stiff sheet will pass through this gap but the pressure of plates 101 causes a more flexible sheet to buckle and pass over the plates 101. In modified arrangements (Figs. 5, 6, not shown), the plate 102 is pivoted on the support 114 about a vertical or horizontal axis, and spring-pressed against the front edge of the plate 101 i.e. there is no gap. Stiff sheets when fed forward from the stack move the plate 102 out of the way, but less rigid sheets are flexed over the corner plates 101. The support 114 for the plates 101, 102 is slidable vertically on a post 96 and is pivoted at 105 to an adjustable lever 104 pivoted at 108 and connected to a weighted biasing member 110 which can be adjusted relatively to the lever to vary the pressure of the plate 101 on the stack. The stack is supported on a base 62 having mounted thereon laterally-adjustable L-shaped guides 72 engaging the sides of the stack, and a rear stop plate. A spring strip 80 attached to each guide 72 carried a member 75 serrated on its inner face to engage the stack through an opening in the guide 72. Separation of the sheets is effected by a friction roller 63 mounted on a pivoted arm 66 and driven intermittently by an endless belt 53 through a slip clutch, the latter allowing the sheets to be pulled forward by feed rollers.
