Abstract

982,283. Feeding sheets. ORMIG ORGANISATIONS-MITTEL G.m.b.H. Oct. 10, 1963 [Nov. 1, 1962], No. 40059/63. Heading B6B. Sheets 4 are registered at one edge against a movable stop, or the bite of a pair of stationary feed rollers 1, 2, by hand or automatic feed means, and urged forward so that a bulge 12 is formed on the sheet, which bulge is sensed by a photo-electric or other sensing means which generates a signal indicating that the sheet edge positively contacts the registration means. A light beam 11 from a source 10 normally impinges on an electric photo-cell 9 which controls an electromagnetic clutch 8 connected between a motor 5 and the roller 1. When the sheet 4 is urged forward over the support table 3 to the bite of the rollers 1, 2 and buckles to form the bulge 12, the latter interrupts the light beam 11, the photo-cell 9 causes operation of the clutch 8, and the roller 1 starts to rotate and feeds, in co-operation with the roller 2, the sheet 4 to a printing, packaging or other machine. The rollers 1, 2 may be separated initially, the sheet being passed between them to engage and buckle against a removable front stop, and the interruption of the light beam by the bulge in the sheet causes the feed rollers to move into sheet-gripping position. By arranging a transparent plate above the sheet to limit the bulge 12, and suitable arrangement of the light beam angle, the bulge will not cut off the light beam unless the side edge of the sheet is adjacent the guide rail 13.
