Abstract
1,123,260. Feeding sheets. RANK XEROX Ltd. 19 Nov., 1965 [28 Dec., 1964], No. 49213/65. Heading B6B. Sheets are fed singly to feed rollers 11 from the bottom of a pile 41 by endless bands 12 cooperating with reversely-rotating rollers 14 which hold back the sheets above the lowest sheet, pivoted fingers 142 being raised to support the pile 41 above the bands 12 when the lowest sheet has started its forward movement and being lowered when that sheet has moved clear of the pile so as to allow the next lowest sheet to be moved forward by the bands 12. The bands 12, which move through slots in a support plate 10 for the pile, have foam rubber surfaces which exert a frictional force on the sheets greater than that between adjacent sheets, and the rollers 14 have around their periphery a rubber strip so as to exert a frictional force on the sheets which is greater than that between adjacent sheets but less than that exerted by the bands 12. A plate 40 with a gap 42 engages the front edge of the pile 41. In the inoperative state, the fingers 142 are held in raised position by a spring acting on the support shaft 144 thereof. When the apparatus is started, a solenoid (148, Fig. 7) is energized and rotates the shaft 144 so that the fingers 142 move downwardly and the bottom sheet is engaged by the bands 20. As that sheet moves forwardly, its front edge engages and opens a switch 146, 147 in the circuit of the solenoid (148), thus allowing the fingers 142 to rise. When the rear edge of the separated sheet passes the switch arm 147, the switch closes to lower the arms 142 and the pile so that the next sheet can be fed by the bands 12. Sheet guides; detecting faulty sheets.-A number of guide arms 125, 126, 127 (see also Fig. 2) with rollers 128 and freely pivoted on the shaft 16 of the rollers 14, rest on the separated sheet as it passes over the end of the bands 12. If a crumpled sheet is fed forward, the arms 125, 127 operate a switch 134, 136 to stop the apparatus. Feed tables.-At its upper end the plate 10 has a slidable frame 43 mounted thereon for supporting long sheets.
