In sheet separating mechanism for printing machines, such as duplicators, the friction roller or other sheet separator is prevented from separating more than one sheet at a time by front corner members which rest on the top sheet under gravity or spring pressure, can move in a vertical plane, and can also exert pressure at the sides of the stack. In some cases, the corner members incorporate front stops for the top sheets. In one form (Fig. 1), a fixed table 1 for a duplicator supports a stack of sheets, and supports two displaceable side rails 3, each having loosely pivoted thereon at 6, a lever 4 carrying at the front end an angular finger 9, 10 which engages, respectively, over the top corner of the top sheet and the side of the stack, and a front part 11 of the finger engages the front of the stack. The lever may be arcuately formed at 5 so that a spring 8, acting on the rear end of the lever obliquely, can urge the finger 9, 10 downwardly and sidewise. In another form (Figs. 2-5), the duplicator stack table is raised periodically, and each side rail 13 is independent of the table and has a front part 16 which acts as a front stop. A carrier 17, having a pin-and-slot connection 18, 19 with the front 16, carries an angular finger 21, 22 which engages the comer of the top sheet and the side of the stack 14, respectively. The top of the carrier 17 is engaged by a leaf spring 27, adjustable in pressure by an abutment 30, 31, so that top and side pressure is exerted on the finger 21, 22. In a further form (Figs. 6-10), the duplicator stack table 40 is raisable and carries the two side rails 48, and the rails are coupled to further rails 46, 50 and carriages 47. A finger 51 is rotatably and displaceably mounted on each carriage 47 by a pin and slot connection 52, 53 and is urged by a spring in the direction P to exert downward and sidewise pressure on the corner of the top sheet and side of the stack. The finger 51 may have a front stop (Fig. 10).
