Apparatus for feeding a sheet to a printing, perforating, embossing, or over-printing device comprises a separator arranged below a stack to feed the sheets one-by-one therefrom, a springy mounted friction block to prevent double feed, and electric contacts arranged in the path of travel of the sheet so as to be closed thereby and control the operation of the separator and printing or like device. Pile tables.-A stack of sheets is supported on a table 2 and located in position by a front plate 41, side plates having funnel-shaped guides extending beyond the front plate, Fig. 9 (not shown), and a back plate 45. The side and back plates are adjustable in position. A curved support plate 46a is slidably mounted on the back plate and the sheets are fed from the bottom of the stack one at a time beneath a throat 41a Separators.-The sheets are separated from the stack by a pair of continuously driven endless belts 3, 4 passing around pulleys 5, 6. The pulleys are mounted in a channel-shaped member 7 pivotally supported on a shaft 25. The member 7 is contained in a second channelshaped member 24, likewise pivotally supported on the shaft 25. The member 7 is urged anticlockwise by a spring 32 passing through an aperture in the bottom of the member 24. Movement of said member 24 is limited by stops 29, Fig. 3. Double feed is prevented by a friction block 34 carried by pins 35 from the front wall 41. Said friction block has an insert 34a with a higher coefficient of friction than the remainder of the block. Springs 81 urging the friction block towards the table, are anchored to forked plates 53 pivoted at 54. The forked plates are socurod to a shaft 51 fixed to a lever 56, Fig. 3. Registering.-The channel-shaped member 24 has upstanding front stops 26. These front stops include electric contacts C which are closed by a separated sheet to complete the circuit of an electromagnet. Dropping-rollers.-Dropping-rollers 52 carried by the shaft 51 are movable to co-operate with constantly rotating rollers 11. Operation.-Operation of the electromagnet by closure of the electric contacts C, actuates a one revolution clutch. This rotates a pointing roller 22 and pinion 19 through one revolution. Rotation of the pinion moves a cam 19a clear of the lever 56. The latter is pivoted about 56a by a spring 57 to free a pivoted lever 31a, 31b from a stop 30 on the channel-shaped member 7. The channel-shaped members 7 and 24 are moved by the spring 32 to lower the separator belts away from the stack and to lower the front stops 26. Pivotal movement of the lever 56 also lowers the shaft 51 to bring the dropping-rollers into operation. In addition, the plates 53 are rotated to increase the pressure of the friction block on the table. Finally, the cam 19a returns the lever 56 to the position shown in Fig. 3, to raise the separator belts, front stops and dropping-rollers and lessen the pressure of the friction block on the table, whereby the next sheet is separated from the stack.
