Abstract
445,493. Tensioning belts. SWIFT, H. W., 2, Ellenthorpe Road, The Glen, Shipley, and SYKES, F., 244, Leymoor Road, Golcar, both in Yorkshire. Nov. 23, 1934, No. 33659. [Class 80 (i)] An idle roller bearing against and interfering somewhat with a free strand of the belt or rope is connected by a lever or linkage to a pressure roller which does not interfere with or deflect the other free strand but exerts upon the belt at some point on its are of contact with the pulley a radial pressure which is dependent upon the tension in the free strand first referred to. The pressure roller 1 is mounted on a spindle 2 carried by a pair of lever arms 3 pivoted at 4 to a bracket 5, the outer ends of the arms carrying a spindle 6 on which is mounted an idle roller 7 engaging the tight side 8 of the belt. Increase in tension of this side forces the pressure roller 1 against the pulley 9. To neutralize the effect of gravity and provide an initial pressure, a spring 10 anchored at 11 is connected to the lever 3. In a vertical drive, Fig. 2, the pressure roller 12 is mounted on a spindle 13 carried by two plates 14 pivoted at 15. The plates are adjustably clamped to a flexible extension 17 pivoted to a rod 19 a boss on which carries the spindle of the idle roller 20 and is connected by a spring 21 to a lug 23. The tight side 25 exerts a toggle action on 19, 21 to produce a radial force on the belt passing over pulley 18. In a modification, the pressure roller is rotatably mounted on a spindle with eccentric pivots carried by a fixed bracket, the spindle being rotated by the idle pulley through a flexible bar in such manner as to relieve pressure on the pressure pulley as the tension in the tight side increases. In a further modification, two pressure rollers are employed, one acting on the driving and the other on the driven pulley. These rollers are mounted on pivoted arms the free ends of which are connected by links to a third link carrying the idle pulley. In addition to using flexible links, the rollers and pulleys may be of non-rigid material, such as rubber, to counteract any tendency to jumping. When applied to rope drives, the rollers and pulleys may be grooved.
