[Also in Division D1 Apparatus for feeding laundered sheets or the like to calenders, and for stretching transversely the front edges, comprises two pairs of gripper means 15, 16 mounted displaceably on cross-struts 11, lla over a feed-table 10, the grippers 15 being retained by a tension spring 45 and the grippers 16 being displaceable along the struts by a pneumatic or other fluid cylinder and ram device 43, 43a. When a sheet 46 is gripped by the sets of jaws 15b, 16b, e.g. by pneumatic cylinder and ram means 23, the grippers 16 are moved along the rods 11, 11a by the ram 43a and, when the sheet 46 is taut, the grippers 15 are also displaced along the rods against the action of the spring 45. During the stretching, or subsequently, the slide assembly comprising the cross-bars 11, 11a grippers 15, 16 and a roller 36, is moved in the direction A, Fig. 1, over the table to feed the sheet to the calender; stops at the end of the table cause the sheet to be released, and the assembly returns to starting position. The assembly is mounted by bearings 28 on slightly inclined guide rods 25, and moved over the table by an endless chain or belt 29 fixed to one bearing 28 and passing over a crank disc 30 which is driven, first in one direction and then in the opposite direction, by an endless chain or belt 32 which is connected to the opposed rods 33, 33a of a pneumatic or other fluidoperated device 34. Rollers 40 on the slide assembly engage guide flanges 41 during the reciprocating feed movements. The feed table 10 may comprise endless conveyer belts, and the rotatable roller 36 is used to urge against the belts smaller laundered articles, such as handkerchiefs, which cannot be clamped in the jaws 15, 16.
