Abstract
679,487. Endless conveyers. GRAF, P. Nov. 9, 1949. [Nov. 9, 1948] No. 28678/49. Class 73 (i). [Also in Groups XVI and XVII] In a machine for the manufacture of paper bags the blanks, e.g. of flat tubular form, with their axes at right-angles to the direction of conveyance, are fed between pairs of endless chain conveyers, each pair comprising one chain disposed above another to grip the blanks between them, and the chains of each pair being urged together at the gripping surfaces by spring-pressed pulleys bearing on the upper chains, adjustment to accommodate blanks of various lengths being provided by forming the machine substantially in two longitudinal parts, one slidable towards and away from the other under the control of an adjusting device while maintaining the drive of the one or more pairs of chain conveyers on each part. In the example the upper and lower endless chain conveyers at both sides of the machine are each subdivided into a short length 6<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, driving a longer length 6, the short lengths being driven by sprockets coaxial with gear wheels 12 driven by gear 11, and the coupling between the respective short and long lengths being effected by pairs of sprockets 12<SP>1</SP> mounted rigidly on sleeve-shafts. Driving tension is applied on the a,djacent co-operating parts of the upper and lower chains, flexing of the relevant part of the lower chains being prevented by sole plates 14 located below them, while the associated parts of the upper chains are tensioned by rollers 15 on spring-controlled bell-cranks. The longitudinal framework consists of girders 3, Fig. 7, of channel or other section supported on two spaced columns 1, 2 the upper faces of which are formed as slide tables whereby the framework on one side can be moved laterally relative to the other side by screw-threaded rods coupled together by a, sprocket chain and controlled by a hand-wheel. The driving pinion 11 on the adjustable side of the machine is driven by a pinion 9<SP>1</SP> mounted on a shaft 10 within the support 2 and of an axial length such that it does not become disengaged from its pinion 11 as a, result of lateral movement of that member and its supports.
