[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XVI] A conveyer for feeding to, carrying through, or delivering from, a machine, paper sheets, cards, or other articles, and simultaneously bringing each article into correct register with a side-lay, comprises a plurality of endless flexible belts each consisting of a plurality of strands which, between selected points spaced longitudinally of the conveyer, are twisted together to form a helical member, means being provided to engage the belts at each of said points and separate the strands whilst permitting forward travel of the belts, thereby effecting rotation about their axes of the portions of the belts between the said strand-separating means. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 in which sheets 4 are to be positioned against an adjustable side-lay 5, the conveyer comprises endless belts 1 passing round rollers 2, 3 and each consisting of two strands which are twisted together at the carrying side of the conveyer and separated at the rollers by engaging in grooves 2a, 3a. Alternatively, the strands may be separated by means of combs placed adjacent the rollers, by discs mounted on the rollers or by belts of another conveyer section engaging around the rollers. The rollers are synchronously driven by a chain 10 engaging sprockets 8, 9. The side-lay 5 may comprise an endless band driven through bevel and sprocket gearing by the driving gear of the conveyer. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8 in which the conveyer carries sheets through a printing or numbering machine, the belts 1 are arranged in groups spaced apart to enable the underside of the sheets to be exposed to the appropriate parts 17, 18 of the machine, and belts 1a passing round intermediate rollers 23, 24 are arranged between these groups. In another arrangement, Fig. 12, the conveyer comprises two sets of belts 1, 101 having their strands wound in opposite directions whereby a sheet is first brought to register with a side-lay 5 and then into register with a side-lay 38 so as to be correctly positioned over machine elements 17, 18. In a modification, Fig. 13, the sheets are brought over these elements by the use of a single set of belts passing over intermediate rollers 37, 39, 40, 41, the strands of the portions of the belts between rollers 2, 37 and 39, 3 being wound in opposite directions. In an alternative arrangement for effecting reversal of side-register within the length of a single set of belts, the strands are separated by pulleys 43, 44, Fig. 14, whereby the strands rearwardly and forwardly of these pulleys provide oppositely-handed helices. According to the Provisional Specification, the belts may each comprise a twisted length of india rubber or like material of triangular, rectangular or of any other cross-section which when twisted will provide angles or ribs.
